Booking A Luxury Hotel Stay? How Hotel “Bed Wars” Help You Get The Perfect Night’s Sleep

Major hoteliers have taken the competition for your tourist dollar into the bedroom, literally. Location is still a major selling point for fortunate properties blessed with a lovely stretch of sand or a choice downtown location. But more and more hotels are evening the playing field by outfitting their rooms with deluxe mattresses and bedding. Here's what the competition looks like.

Mattresses

The gloves are off on the mattresses. Pillow top beds are the clear winner, and the thicker the mattress the better. Some properties boast mattresses more than a foot thick and keep the coil count of those mattresses a guarded secret. The higher the coil count, the more support and comfort. Those pillow tops can be anything from a thick layer of memory foam to an ultra-plush, suede-like, covered, down-filled model.

Pillows and Sheets

As far as sheets go, the higher the thread count, the softer the sheets. Egyptian cotton seems to be the hands down favourite, but those thread counts are another secret. A few properties are using poly-cotton blends, but they seem to be on the way out. When it comes to pillows, it is not only the type of stuffing in that pillow, but how many cover the bed. Typical choices for stuffing include a feather core surrounded by down, hypoallergenic foam or even buckwheat. Between 5 and 6 pillows are normally placed on a king bed, but a few properties have gone all out with 8 or 9 fluffy clouds gracing the headboard.

Bed Covers

Down duvets with a decorative cover are the rage right now, sometimes complemented by an additional throw. You'll find the occasional poly-fill duvet as the standard. Most properties also carry these as spares for those with allergy issues. Putting a property logo on the duvet covers is old school. The trend now is to develop a signature design that is replicated throughout the rooms. Silks, satins and brushed cottons are some of the materials used in the covers. Bolster pillows and even bed scarves are sometimes added, turning that bed into an artistic creation.

Extra Perks

Nightly turn down service is a given at high end properties. You might find chocolates or flowers on your pillow or the in-room music system playing some relaxing sounds. Some properties provide lavender sleep sprays that are meant to relax you and sleep masks for those afternoon naps. A few hotels have also gone all out in the bed department for your four-legged best friend. Comfy dog beds, along with a take home doggie water bowls and treats, are available in pet-friendly rooms.
